BETTER Parenting: A Guide for Somali Parents in the Diaspora by Ruqia Abdi is a useful resource for Somali parents and families raising children in the US.
Having served on the elected Board of Directors of the Cedar Riverside Community School with Ruqia, I know she has valuable insight from all her years working with parents and children, helping them navigate US culture while parenting, that has led to her desire to raise awareness of current parenting issues and provide a parenting concept in the Islamic tradition. Ruqia is uniquely experienced to offer this guidance as a result of her education (both Islamic training and a Child Development degree) combined with her firsthand experience as a mother, navigator and advocate working with parents and families.
BETTER Parenting is a needed resource that will inform and support Somali parents.

I am pleased to see this thoughtful and scholarly work from Ms. Ruqia Abdi. There is a clear need in our community to bring well researched insight about our community, from our community. Ruqia is well known and well respected as a thought leader regarding East African-Minnesotan youth. The success of our community will be dependent upon our ability to organize systems that build the capacity of families to guide our next generation towards our faith and civic ideals. Ms. Abdi, in her work, demonstrates that this effort cannot be done in isolation, cannot be done effectively without building right relationships with mainstream institutions such as healthcare, education, and government. Ms. Abdi should be seen as a trusted resource for both our families and systems that look to support those families. Chapter 2, Early Childhood; First Things First and Chapter 5, Education: Islamic and Secular are must reads for East African immigrant families as they strive to develop an understanding of how best to raise a Muslim child in our current pluralistic society.

Ms. Ruqia Abdi, provides a unique and valuable perspective on this subject and being a parent, educator and a concerned citizen is the best person who can grasp this topic.
This book is a milestone contribution to our understating of challenges of parenting in the West and provides culturally relevant to these demanding.
